Why terrorists aren't using tech (30 Oct, 2017)

Why haven't terrorists started using some of the amazing "off the shelf" technology that would enable them to deliver lethal payloads without risking their own lives?

Simple... lives are cheap, technology is not.

Could it be that terrorism is as much about creating a cult of total obedience and sacrifice within the ranks of the followers as it is about killing your enemy?

Does this mean we're unlikely to see terrorists making extensive use of modern technology to improve their ability to strike fear into the heart of us infidels?

Could it be that terrorists are generally idiots? Imagine getting an idiot to assemble your cruise missile. You'd still need a reason able amount of skill to put one together. There'd probably be too many "as god wills it's" in the process. "That wire's not soldered correctly", "never mind, as god wills it". "That wire doesn't go there", "never mind god will fix it". Better to use an idiots real skill as an idiot rather than an getting them to do something moderately complicated.

Assuming all terrorists are idiots is certainly easier than wondering what prompted their grievance in the first place.

Of course and it wasn't caused by the west bombing the living crap out of them. Invading their countries and killing civilians had nothing to do with it either.

And how does that explain terrorists like the Baader-Meinhof Group?

from wiki
Baader-Meinhof Gang (German: Baader-Meinhof-Gruppe, Baader-Meinhof-Bande), was a West German far-left militant group. The RAF was founded in 1970 by Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, Horst Mahler, and Ulrike Meinhof.[b] The West German government considered the Red Army Faction to be a terrorist organization.[c] The group was supported by the East German state security agency, the Stasi.

There were three successive incarnations of the organization:

the "first generation" which consisted of Baader, Meinhof and their associates,
the "second generation" RAF, which operated in the mid- to late 1970s after several former members of the Socialist Patients' Collective joined, and
the "third generation" RAF, which existed in the 1980s and 1990s.

so im guessing its the other side of the fence
political nutjobbery
