Is the tech-hype based con growing in regularity and intensity?

Why are there seemingly so many stupid politicians, bureaucrats and movie stars who are prepared to throw money at ridiculous ideas that respected members of the science and technology communities have proven (by way of the math and the laws of physics) are completely impractical or even impossible?

Why is nobody held accountable when huge sums of public money are squandered on such follies?

Why would anyone bother working at a real job when it seems that all you need to do is come up with an exciting pitch for some impossible product and get large sums of money thrown at you as a result?

Those with the gift of the gab. Thats basically whats happening here. They're selling some tech el-dorado could just as easily be selling used cars or insurance. There's a sucker or VC investor everywhere these days looking for the next big thing.
