Risen from the dead (9 Mar, 2018)

Sorry for the two-day sickie but it was all I could manage to get out of bed for toileting purposes.

What a horrible few days -- but I am on the mend and despite still being unable to get more than a few minutes sleep in one session, I'm starting to function again.

So, is YouTube becoming a valuable instrument for up and coming musicians? Are some of them being seen as "sell-outs" by their ardent fans when they opt to forgo "indie" status and sign up to the first studio that comes along?

And was the census really being run from a US-based cloud server? If so, given Uncle Sam's overwhelming desire to poke his nose into everyone else's business, how can we be sure that the privacy promised by the NZ government is actually being delivered?

Now I look forward to a (hopefully) peaceful weekend and a chance to recover more cerebral and physical function.

Damned worms and wiruses! (those Indian scammers were right eh?)

Interesting that a US IP was noted, good skills that person.
It belongs to Incapsula a company that provides DDOS protection, Load Balancing and caching via a number of worldwide distributed data centres. So I guess technically the census data does go overseas but I have no knowledge (yet) of where the actual data systems are that are behind the Census. Our who manages the security of the data.

I note they do have a POP in Auckland.

Something to do on a wet day, dig deeper. :)

Good to see you're on the mend Bruce.

As for the Census, I must say it didn't occur to me at the time that they were using overseas resources.
Thinking about it, the website didn't crash, the response was quick & pages loaded quickly - this couldn't possibly be the work of any of our government departments!

As a musician, who in his late 40's decided to pick up a guitar and write music. I find it is never easer to make your own recordings for not much out lay in equipment (pc based) where my main guitar and preforming rig cost more than the pc, peripherals and software. I decided to start a project called "Slow Men Thinking" the goal was not aiming to be famous! Preforming what I do in public Does not appeal to me. I release all my stuff on You-tube on a as and when I feel like it. funniest thing is the name of my channel does not reflect the the so called band name and I cant be bothered doing anything about it channel name is "retroman33366"

As for the Census I did mine on Paper... Don't trust this new fangled Interweeb thing it if has anything to do with government!

My guess is that they are hosting the server in Sydney, not the US.
Isn't that what 'the cloud' is all about?
Using other peoples computers and off-shoring skilled work in order to save cost - security would be a secondary consideration.

Sure if New Zealand had of gotten in on tech, I vaguely remember the govt going on about knowledge wave economy a decade or two ago, but what happened there? Still all dairy cows and sheep :-)

Traceroute on the IP from the US shows it heading off to Singapore where it starts timing out.

As for the census, we are still waiting for the code or paper forms. On Monday I filled out the form on their site for not having a code. Haven't heard anything back yet. Apparently no one else on my street has had one yet either. I assume this means that our street no longer exists according to the Government.

Perhaps its a way to grow the consolidated fund. If you didn't do your census thing then you're looking at a stiff fine.

Claims that you never received the code or forms will likely be ignored and you'll be fined anyway.

Tsk, tsk, we know the government would *never* make a mistake so it must be your fault! :-)

There is a process they need to follow, initially a stern census worker is meant to turn up asking you to do it, then they escalate it to eventually get to the final step of prosecution/fines.
I am more worried they will declare that since no one lives in our area they will not bother with upgrading the Internet infrastructure, roll back the power infrastructure and assign less funding to services like the hospitals etc.
