Is Musk the new Tesla? (13 Mar, 2018)

Are their too many striking similarities between Musk and Tesla?

Both have shown moments of brilliance but both also seem to have a very fragile grasp on reality at times.

Could Elon ultimately end up following the same sad path as Tesla if his paranoia about AI and his burning desire to save the species consumes all his wealth?

Is true genius always just a hair's breadth away from insanity?

Nope, I'll stand on the other side of this one today.

Tesla was a tortured genius without the financial backing to achieve all his inventions and visions, and had Thomas Edison as his unscrupulous competitor.

Elon Musk is a very intelligent dreamer (genius maybe, but not genius inventor) with potloads of money to try and achieve his dreams, and has multiple competitors taking advantage of those ideas. Musk is pioneering the trails as you've noted before, with others coming behind him to reap the rewards. When both Musk and Hawking start warning of the dangers of AI without controls then yes, I think it's time to sit up and take notice.

No.

Musk is able to look at how something is operating, take in the big picture, set about solving the inefficiencies and succeeding in improving it:

Online payments (which didn't really exist) - PayPal.
Electric cars that don't look stupid - Tesla.
Launching rockets at a fraction of the cost - SpaceX.
Fixing South Australia's power grid woes in under 100 days - Tesla.

A quick note about the history of Tesla Motors. Musk didn't found it or name it. He was one of the first real investors and has been called a founder since then. But the company existed for almost a year before he came on board.

I've always harboured the thought in the back of my mind that perhaps Elon Musk really is Tesla reincarnate.

...perhaps Tesla wasn't so crazy after all.
