You know the media is lost when... (11 Dec, 2018)

Are Stuff really serious that they're going to moderate out content and comment that isn't aligned to their stated position that man-made global warming is fact?

Do the nay-sayers get sidelined simply because an editor somewhere has decided that "it's my way or the highway?"

Whilst I think everyone will agree that there is no doubt our climate is changing and the planet is warming, the magnitude of man's effect on this process is still something that is highly debatable -- unless you're reading Stuff that is.

How arrogant of a news publication to "take sides" on an issue like this -- even if they may have taken the right side. Isn't the whole purpose of the Fourth Estate to remain detached from the issues and simply report the facts, including both sides of any contentious issues?

There's been an overwhelming volume of information produced by robust scientific methods to lay the groundwork of fact. In this case Stuff is stating that they will not be supporting or publishing bullshit articles. That I think is fair enough. It's like them saying
Stuff accepts the overwhelming scientific consensus that the Earth is an oblate spheroid and not flat. We welcome robust debate about the appropriate response to living on a ball, but do not intend to provide an avenue for denialism or flat-earth advocacy. This applies equally to the stories we will publish in Can't Fall Off the Edge of the Planet and to our moderation standards for reader comments

On the other hand, if there is new information from relevant fields, for example NASA solar probes, showing a cycle matching the climate change figures, and is backed up by robust scientific method, then that should be part of the existing debate and merged with current knowledge. I can't see something like that lumped in with Conspiracy Theories. But their statement is an attempt to say they will not be a platform for the climate-version of the Flat Earth Society which I think is fair enough.

With so many newspapers and news web sites, etc what are the true news worthy sites around that do not publish fake news or have a blinkered mindset such as Stuff.

It's a dangerous slippery slope that adds to the disrespect with which the (so-called mainstream) media is now viewed by the general populace.

Imagine if the judiciary operated that way.

Their problem....our problem too, is that the planet and civilization are facing an unprecedented crisis with the possibility of it being global catastrophe. We are already in the midst of a well-documented extinction event and if we don’t make some radical and inevitably unpopular changes to what we take for granted it could become a major extinction event that could include Homo sapiens or a sustantial proportion of us. Especially if we hit the tipping point of runaway methane clathrate sublimation that could push the average global temperature over 5°C: wildly unknown territory especially when it could happen in a decadal timeframe instead of 100K or 1M like past events.

Unfortunately this has all happened at an unfortunate time, when too many countries are crawling out of the rubble of the deeply flawed Neo-Liberal experiment and when too many people have enough problems dealing with the day-to-day let alone worrying about their grandchildren’s futures. At the same time there are too many profoundly greedy and short-sighted political and business leaders who are willing to spend extraordinary amounts to promote uncertainty and confusion.

Hence we are seeing “facts” and “contentious issues” that don’t and never have survived scrutiny, but that are relentlessly repeated and rephrased in a deliberate effort to maintain the status-quo irrespective of the longer term dangers. It is very brave of Stuff to bite the bullet and admit they have screwed up over the last decades by presenting the problem as being two-sided. It simply isn’t! You can argue about politics and economics but you can’t argue with physics and chemistry.

I don't get it. You say

They have sorted the fact from the fantasy. It seems to me you are getting exactly what you asked for?

Hey, just because they're wrong doesn't mean people ought to be denied the right to speak and we must remember that any truth will withstand challenge.

How will we know if someone with important information that may ultimately alter our understanding of the problem is sidelined and their input suppressed simply because Stuff has made its mind up and now refuses to accept any contrary opinion or information?

So now you Don't want journalists to investigate the issues and sort the fact from fantasy? There are people out there who think rivers flowing North proves the world is flat, because otherwise they would be flowing uphill. Should Stuff print that too?

Of course I want investigation... but on a subject as technical as climate change, do you *really* think that Stuff has any journalists suitably qualified to sort the wheat from the chaff?

And what if a group of scientists (for instance) discovered that a slight spectral shift in sunlight is actually the primary driver of climate change and that a rise in CO2 levels is simply coincidental or perhaps a consequence of that change? Wouild stuff say "we're not printing that because we have decided that climate change *is* man-made"?
