Seriously... how many people are going to pay quarter of a grand a year to access a load of personality-based opinion pieces and celebrity trivia wrapped in the misleading title of "premium journalism" as offered by NZME through the NZ Herald website?

Will Stuff be laughing all the way to the bank in the wake of NZME's moves?

Or will NZME start raking in the big-bucks via its paywall and thus make Stuff inclined to follow suit?

The Hosking/Hawkesby clowns work for NZME - and get to write editorials too. The horror. The risk is just too great that they'll turn up on premium content. So I will be forsaking this arrangement.

Not for me. Stuff and NZ Herald have been crap for ages now.

Nope, they're not getting any of my coin. The Otago Daily Times went a better way IMHO: still have a website with the majority of local+syndicated news, but the full site is behind a paywall. The paywalled site is a digital version of the daily paper, and available to all subscribers of the dead-tree version.

NO chance. My father used to be a Herald subscriber, and after he died we cancelled it. I suspect he would be typical of the Herald's subscriber base - subscribe from habit. He also used to believe was was printed in it. The Sunday Star Times got so bad even he wouldn't buy it any more.
I used to subscribe until a few years ago when I realized what the cost was per month, and the fact that half the time, i never even read it or it only took a couple of minutes at most.
I skim the Herald and Stuff in the mornings from habit, only looking for NZ local news. Even that is less after the blatant and outright leftwing bias adn lies of both sites, but especially Stuff.
Overseas news I go to the international news sites.
I shall have broaden my horizons to other sites.

I see the NZH has already discounted the subscription to $2.50 a week (for early adopters -- and only for the first 8 weeks).

They're also touting that now it will "glitter"... thanks to the republication of stuff from even more overseas newspapers.

Bruce wrote:To me, "premium journalism" is more about digging deep to get the real facts on issues that are important to everyone. Politics, economics, crime and the like. These are the things where *real* journalists excel and can prove their worth. Sadly, it seems that NZME would rather profile famous people, publish opinion pieces by "celebrities" and talk about social media for their "premium journalism".

It's all in the way it and the words are 'packaged, ' folks. A bit of semantical chicanery goes a long way.

"Premium journalism" is grossly concatenated. It does not mean premium quality journalism.

Rather: you will pay a premium (like insurance) for our journalism efforts.

I just came across a paywalled article. It's easy to get around in only a few clicks. See here: https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1123040879927652352/pu/pl/OHZmGwLwoXT1FaoJ.m3u8?tag=10&descending=true

If they are going to implement a paywall they need to do it properly!

The WHO has released a report on how to best reduce your chances of suffering from dementia.

Here is the BBC's take on the story:

Here is the NZ Herald's version:

Seriously... they want people to pay for a story that's available on scores of other news sites around the world? Do they not understand how the internet works? Clearly not.
