looking through the news this morning and came across this sounds like a fairly commonsense approach perhaps with a bit less of the religious card in play unless you want that of course this could be a solution to the cycle of petty offending before graduating to the overall downward cycle of gangs drugs prison etc costing lots of taxpayers dollars. perhaps they got something right for once im sure Mr key would jump on the bandwagon quick enough given a nudge from his US overlords and fed up kiwis watching the cycle repeat over and over

It'd never work in NZ... remember that we're all about bricks and mortar -- the stuff prisons are made from.

Rehab? Bah... there's no capital gain in rehab.

Easier to simply privatise the prison system (because private companies will get plenty of $$ from banks to buy land and build prisons -- with that longer-term capital gain in mind) and deal with the symptoms of a disfunctional society than it is to actually deal to the *cause* of the problem.

There's no profit for speculators and investors in rehab! The only people who benefit from rehab are the community and our decision-makers don't seem to give a damn about them.
