a gps chip presumably being capable of transmitting to the nearest air traffic control tower
comes with its own car battery
what more could you ask for
on a 50grm quadcopter
( ,,,,,,,, ....... A E I O U use em sparingly theres probably not enough )

i might live and eat in a sewer .. but hey look how many of these shiny things i have got

Yeah... that's the DM spin/hype/sizzle/repeat engine working there.

How can you have a "fatal" near-miss?

Well they do acknowledge in the body of the article that they could have been fatal if there actually was a collision.

Sigh... Mind you, having read the recent press-releases disguised as "news" on Stuff, I suspect they'll be hiring a bunch of DM "journalists" soon (or already have-done).

The DM is the Britz version of Fox News and owned by Rup the Shocker Ocker. Nothing like a dose of hype to roll the "Story".
