If there was ever an indicator of how cheap complex electronics has become then the mobile phone I purchased yesterday for just $9 is the perfect example.

Fortunately, while others are spending $800 or more on a fancy smart-phone every year or two, I'm more than happy with my $9 basic talk/text phone with its 3 weeks of standby time and $7 a month operating cost.

mid-range smart phones are coming down in price - Motorola's Moto G and Moto E (labelled a "feature phone slayer") are very reasonably priced phones.

Earlier this year I would've bought a Moto G if I was using my own money, but work eventually got me a Galaxy S4 which I'm very happy with ($0 on two year contract from Telecom)

For smart fones at present the Moto G is the best bang for your buck. The new LTE version coming out at the end of July is even better.

Expect to see these $9 beauties everywhere: they're giving them away, presumably without the SIM, so it may be the SIM that costs $9: "Buy 1 HUAWEI ASCEND Y320, get 1 SAMSUNG 1205T for FREE" also at The Warehouse. I wonder what data are being gathered by Samsung...

By the way, the Warehouse special runs until 15 July, and then it reverts to its extortionate full price of.......................... $19

I'm so glad I got in when I did. I'd hate to have to sell the wife into slavery to afford such a fine phone!

What surprises me is the fact the phone wasn't locked to the 2 degrees network. All the cheap Vodafone's are.

Yeah, it surprised me too!

It did come with a *free* 2Degrees SIM card but I've already got several of those so it was a good deal.

I guess the market for dumb-phones is drying up so they're quitting stock as quickly as they can.
