Why are millions of innocent, responsible, trustworthy people being punished for the crimes of so few "idiots"?

What has made (for instance) the FCC in the USA suddenly changed its belief that HAM radio enthusiasts can be trusted with equipment that has the potential to be used on illegal frequencies?

Why are RC model fliers being restricted simply because a few clowns with "drones" (which are a different kettle of fish) have behaved badly?

Are "the powers that be" simply looking for (and have found) some lame excuses to restrict the freedoms of the vast majority who pose no risk or threat to anyone or anything?

Isn't this borderline fascism?

NZ has implemented its moves on this already and has restricted the ability of the general public to import these, but continue to allow a path for licensed amateurs to bring them in.

NZ's wording also explicitly allows amateurs to use them on permitted channels,

https://gazette.govt.nz/notice/id/2018-go4836
"(4) The use or installation of unrestricted two way radio devices is prohibited other than by a person holding a General Amateur Radio Operator’s Certificate of Competency, and operating within the terms and conditions of the amateur radio licence."

So it's just "the land of the free and the home of the brave" who are losing their rights and privileges on this one?

Oh, the irony!

It is a case of the land of the people who think they are free.

It is a big concern that such trend may come to our shores but remember that we do not live in a paranoid society. It looks like the law was brought in because of that culture, hopefully common sense will prevail here.

im not sure i can make myself 100% agree with you
sure
for the usa its worse because they have managed to keep a 2 party system
but what we end up selecting ( even if it was the theoretical best of whats available ) isnt that much better .. and i doubt it would even reach those heights
