Yes, I have returned!

The children have been debastardised (yeah, the old-sheila and I got married on the weekend) and now I'm preparing to be a poster-boy for ultra-fast broadband so it's another uber-busy week ahead. At least I don't feal like a Snotify star, streaming on a box of tissues near you!

I hope you've had your nostangia nudged by some of the historical milestones mentioned in today's columns with respect to the progress of digital communications over the past few decades.

Stay tuned for more change because... we're about to spend the rest of our lives in the future!

OMG! "StarNet." Are we really that old, Bruce? An e-address of TZQ054 and surcharges for o'seas email comms. And a paper manual, if I recall aright. All supported by a 1200 / 75 (or 300 baud full duplex) didactic modem. No GUI, all CLI and no HDDs. Yet we survived and grew.

Tis a weird world. Then and now.

I remember visiting an old varsity flatmate/engineer Adrian DeCroy in the later 90s, whom ran Qbik (wingate) from his home in Ponsonby. While I had 28k dial up he was running a 1Mbit radio link setup with Voyager I think. Cost around $1000/month, but when he was selling software world wide, that was nothing...

Here I am now with 100Mbit down, 20Mbit up on Fibre in Whangarei and it seems like nothing...

Does anyone here have the new Chorus ONT? It looks decidedly more consumer level than the original, but I don't have one myself to see if it is any more or less reliable.

I wonder how well it handles the 10G connections Orcon is trialing? Perhaps Bruce should leverage his poster boy status to get into the trial & let us know what he thinks. What say you Bruce?
