They don't make them like this any more (11 Feb, 2020)

It is quite amazing what mankind can do when we set our minds to it.

Who'd have thought that Voyager 2 would still be working almost half a century after its launch?

Who'd have thought we'd be able to deliver fixes across 17 light-hours of space to patch up a failing onboard system?

How sad that V2 only has a few short years of life left in its power-source.

Perhaps NASA should start making smartphones?

Estimates vary but the cost of Voyager2 is usually over 800 million. Would you want to pay that for a cell phone?

For a cellphone that would run for 50 years on a single charge in the inky darkness of space it still sounds like a good deal! You could play Angry Birds or Candy Crush almost forever on such a wonderful device :-)

"Voyager 2 was launched almost half a century ago and dispatched on a mission which eventually saw it leave the solar system and head out into interstellar space. It is now more than 18 billion Km from home and was still working... until late last month when something went wrong." The aliens got it and it will come back as Vega in a couple of hundred years. :-)

Just don't let Apple design anything. We don't need it to deliberately slow down after a couple of years so they can hock another nearly identical product.

Tres bien

Let Microsoft make a spaceship with windows, any errors and they just shut the windows and re-open them again ;)

All humans do is make stuff. This is our sole claim to importance.
All the other claims: only we have language, only we dream, have emotions, mourn, think about the past, remember, etc etc has been proven to be bollocks.

And we don't make things well, especially nowdays, it's all about consumerism.
we don't think, we beleieve what we are taught and once we have an idea in our heads will fight to the death to defend it, despite logic or new evidence.
We're racist, arrogant and stupid.

Think not? Look at the net, the news....all the people who believe in ghosts, aliens (in ships mutilating cattle and the like, not the perhaps real ones far away), magic cures, food fads, prejudices against others for assorted stupid reasons, treatment of other species, hell treatment of our own....

So we made some tin cans and went to the moon, so? Thats was a how dare russia get into space first, lets beat them. which is why the US has lost interest now.
It's also a we should go everywhere, take over the place and own it, like we have done on this planet withput thought for the consequences.

And engineering? I can list the fails, the oh but this is brilliant will last forever, oops, but we didn't think of that......but I won't.
We should work on out behaviour more and think,
