A sage reminder (15 Dec, 2020)

Were you affected by the brief but broad outage of Google's services?

Are we overly reliant on Google and its cloud-based services?

How would it affect your work and play if suddenly, without warning, all those services stopped for a protracted period?

Does it really make sense to replace a light switch with millions of dollars of tech over which you have virtually no control?

And what if Google were to start charging for all of its services by way of an annual fee for every unique Google account -- would you pay or would you forego the power, flexibility and convenience that the associated services provide?

I presume that (in this case) "authentication" means something like 'signing in with gooble.'

I think faecesbook offers something similar. Perhaps even 4Twits?

I always sign in without utilising any such services.

Google does have a habit of building/launching services, and then shutting them down not long later. Some services like 'unlimited, free, forever' photo hosting was obviously going to be a bait-and-switch from the get-go. Sucker them in, then get them to pony up. I hope free offerings like search and email provide enough value back to Google that they will keep them on providing them 'forever'. I could/should migrate away from gmail, but where would I go? I suppose I could at least start using my own domain name, via the gmail client.

Rather than being overly-reliant on just Google, I am overly-reliant on Google AND Apple AND Microsoft :) All these services - all this cloud-based storage - and still I have to email files to myself

Geography is one thing that DDG is really bad at.

Narrowing the search criteria to results from New Zealand is pointless.
DDG still delivers results from everywhere.

Sadly, it seems that only gooble can do that with significant success.

From gooble, you mean?
