What an interesting experience that was.

For all its amazing technology I have to admit that there's a lot of "mechanical stuff" inside those MRI machines and I did feel like it was the equivalent of a gramaphone record player with all those moving parts and incidental noises.

What is the most interesting piece of medical tech you've been exposed to?

Go one better Bruce - get the 3D set of images and I can print you a backup copy of your brain - just in case ;-)
(Seriously though - if you get the files I'd be happy to print a version. There's even an Instructables for it :D ).

Must say the MRI's are a lot of fun tech (and good that when you have contrast that they tell you beforehand that it feels like you're pee'ing yourself)

For more mindblowing proceedure, think about having a stent inserted in one of your main arteries - thru a tiny hole in your wrist!

Lots of cool technology (and by cool, I mean REALLY cold to get the super conducting magnets working).
But I've always believed that any machine making "banging, clattering, beeping, howling and shrieking" levels of noise are just microseconds away from complete self disassembly.
Any machine making such levels noise must be out of balance and eating up bearing surfaces etc.

Had an MIR done years ago for an injured leg. They ran some plastic ear plugs and tubing to literally pipe music to my ears to help cover the noise. I recall they used to be called Nuclear Magnetic Resonant Imaging, but that scared people off for some reason....
