Mine crypto, get a free lunch? (4 Jun, 2021)

Imagine free software, daily earnings and maybe even a free computer, all thanks to crypto-mining!

Imagine again... there are still no free lunches on the internet.

Would you take up one of these offers?

Do you think other, less informed people may do so?

What would this do to the planet in terms of all that electricity consumption?

No and yes. No I wouldn't do it and yes, some less informed will. The number of computers I see bought cheap from harvey norman and noel leemings that really struggle will struggle even more with this crap running on it. But, but they'll say I don't want you to remove that, but make my machine go faster. Anyway I doubt it will be available for Linux so there no worries for me there!

Although now tailing off a little, is it coincidence that the level of Norton-related spam emails has ballooned in recent weeks?
That's based on what I see in my junk folder and I suspect that the ISP SPAM filters are weeding out some, too.

<nostalgia>
History is repeating itself with a variation.
AdAdvantage was going to be this new "paradigm shift" in 2000.
You got paid a pittance to allow a banner with ads to always be on display.
That was a large area of screen real estate in those days of 800x600.
The payments got to be less and less over time.
I seem to remember a very skeptical Aardvark article was written about it.

pretty sure the permission / non permission to run a crypto miner on your gear isnt new
some years ago a few online games were asking the same question .. for free game upgrades etc
others were just not asking
great if mum n dad are paying for the power
not so good if your the mum n dad

free computers are probably a no go .. i would be in the rush to grab one .. then install mint linux
a free / low cost graphics card might work though .. it can have the program / access firmwared onto it ( apparently huawei can already do this )
( ,,,,,,,, ....... A E I O U use em sparingly theres probably not enough )

i might live and eat in a sewer .. but hey look how many of these shiny things i have got

A lot of manufacturers seem to be embracing Windows 10 S, which has the distinct advantage of not allowing them to pre-install bloatware... Perfect for the average user who will never need to look beyond their default web browser.

The other side of the coin is it isn't possible to switch out of S mode without signing in to the store with a Microsoft account.

Basically a locked down version of Windows 10 which only allows installation of applications via the Microsoft store.
