Carbon neutral mail (1 Jul, 2021)

Is it just a bunch of smoke and mirrors to claim carbon-neutrality when all you're doing is buying a bunch of carbon offsets?

Is the carbon offset concept just an opportunity for people to make a bit of extra cash and for others to unfairly claim to be helping the planet?

Surely the only way to be truly carbon neutral is not to emit CO2 in the first place?

How much longer do you think that NZ Post will be around? Has their time come and gone in a world where independent courier services offer lower prices and better services while regular day-to-day communications have almost entirely shifted from mail to email?

Short of their little electric cars for the last mile delivery, all the rest is dinosaur burning.

If only there was a off road freight system that can go between places, and potentially be electrified....maybe fed from overhead wires and/or battery.....and you could have a big power unit, and lots of places to put stuff.....they might be able to use it for wood as well, and all the places to hold stuff could be towed in a train......I wonder what we could all it.

1. Employ more people, on (e-)bikes, improve service & delivery times, get lots more business, have the resources to overall reduce Carbon emissions, employ more people, etc
OR
2. Employ less people, decrease service, complain that people aren't using your service so prices will have to increase, pay for Marketing spin to look Green, employ less people, etc

#1 requires an initial cash injection with long-term gains. #2 saves money in the short term, Consultants/Managers look good on this year's budget figures, to hell with the future.
Why do they ALYWAYS choose Door #2?

The tracking thing is a bad joke, anyway.
Today's report on a tracked, overnight courier item, collected on 28 June . . .

We were going to deliver it a couple of days ago, but now we don't even know where it is!

Many organisations fiddle their carbon use status. Like the Wellington Taxi company that said they were carbon neutral. The company may have offset all their carbon, but the cars were owned by independent contractors so the carbon used by the cars did not factor into the holding companies result.

I wonder how many of the NZ Post labelled trucks are not actually owned by the parent companies. Their freight planes are not directly owned by NZ Post.

And don't forget all their employees exhale CO2 Do they offset that?

We live in a carbon based life form, and there is a fixed amount of the element carbon on earth. Simply paying someone to plant trees is a fraud. Within a few decades the wood will rot or burn and release the carbon as CO2 or methane.

The problem is that a substantial amount of the fixed amount of carbon is sequestered underground but Homo sapiens* discovered it could be dug up and released into the biosphere. And is continuing to do so in spite of decades of warnings that it’s a very bad idea.

It has been released into the biosphere for millennia without our help. Oil and gas come to the surface and oxidise at quite a high rate, underground and surface coal deposits have burnt since they were laid down. Several years ago I did some research and found that natural undersea oil seepage was comparable to our extraction rates. Gas seepage would likely be much more.

50 years ago they were a lot closer to carbon neutral mail than they are now

all long haul mail went by train .. stations had mail room sorting
all home delivery was done on a bike

now they are to fat to use a bike and to many just attend an office
( ,,,,,,,, ....... A E I O U use em sparingly theres probably not enough )

i might live and eat in a sewer .. but hey look how many of these shiny things i have got
