If/when an NZer dies due to CV19 spreading in our community due to this reckless decision, those responsible should be tried for manslaughter.

We know from experience that people ignore lockdowns and endanger others by travelling when they're not supposed to. It would only take one infected Sydney resident to "nip up to Brisbane" and infect a few locals before they jumped on a plane to NZ and we're done-for

Obviously I (and many of my readers) are a hell of a lot smarter (or less swayed by the rich lobbying of the tourism industry) than are our politicians. Yes, the inevitable is happening but I bet they'll say "we never saw that coming" :-(

One irony I see in all of this is that so-called 'Health Departments'
are actually disease departments. Just doesn't sound the same,
does it? Even if it's a lot closer to the truth.

Nz $20 per hour
Wrong to open travel bubble
Aus $37 per hour

So we let our lowest paid workers walk off the farms to working
Holiday in Australia.

Only thing is lock down in Sydney has trapped them

This yo-yo Hopkinson either makes it to next
Election intact or Winston is back.

Winston is our connection with Muldoon’s think big
What does Marylin Waring and the PM have in common

So the travel bubble with Australia has been suspended for two months.

Did anyone *really* think it wouldn't come to this?

I'd love to see a comprehensive analysis of just what the net result was for the NZ tourism industry and the country as a whole. I suspect we'll never be told because the answer would simply illustrate the folly of this ridiculous initiative that was always going to end in failure.

Still, what would I know... I'm not a politician or political lobbyist :-/

It doesn't take much to be smarter than a politician... after all, I think this column clearly pointed out the lunacy of opening a travel bubble with Australia and now we have CV19 in the community.

The paltry gains our tourism industry gained from that bubble are almost certainly going to be negated by at least an order of magnitude (the last figures I heard were that each week in L4 lockdown costs the economy almost a billion dollars).

Can we please have some at least semi-intelligent people in our parliament?

The government was under too much pressure from businesses to get the Aussies back & spending money, so they caved.
I bet the same businesses saying National would have had the economy roaring again by now if they were in charge are now going to cry foul over the lockdown.

Do you think the current government will continue to try please everybody, or will they accept the fact National is probably going to win the next election & there is nothing they can do about it - every choice they make is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.
Once the worst of the danger is over, everyone will forget how bad things could have been & instead focus on what it cost to ride out the storm in relative safety.
