More lunacy (24 May, 2022)

My track record in spotting tech-wrecks about to happen is pretty damned good.

The Martin Jetpack was never going to fly (commercially) and I issued a warning long before it was fashionable to do so.

Check the back-issues of this column and you'll find I've been right on the money many, many times.

So now it's time for another "OMG... I can't believe people are giving this crowd money" stories and warnings.

How can people be so stupid?

Why is it that just about anyone who can rustle-up a few fancy 3D renderings, make a webpage and throw around phrases such as "carbon neutral", "Zero emissions", "environmentally sustainable" and "electric powered" -- are able to drum up so much financing and interest from those with more money than sense?

Ah well... watch this spot but I am prepred to bet good money that we won't be seeing seagliders traversing the Tasman sea anytime soon.

Might work well as a Rich Man's taxi around the Hauraki Gulf on a calm day, but that seems about it.

Yeah, I was contemplating its potential for coping with Cook Strait this week, with 4-5m waves out in the strait and 10m nearer the coast. Both Interislanders were still running with a warning that the trip "might not be as smooth as usual!"

This reeks of pump & dump. There is no way they can actually believe a 12 person craft can operate between Christchurch and Wellington for $60 per head.
Next they will be claiming the craft are going to be fully autonomous.

A sea glider - sounds nice, but has anyone seen a float plane take off. It needs LOTS of power to clear the water. And what if there is a swell, more power and less safety.
This is head in the clouds stuff - pun intended.

It's also "fly by wire" The wire that's suspended across the Cook Straight for it to hang on to.
