No sign language for te reo?

Postby aardvark_admin » Fri Oct 22, 2021 10:08 am

I was just watching the government's announcements in the 10am livestream.

I noticed that when a member of the press asked a question in Maori and the minister replied the same, the poor girl doing the signing for deaf viewers remained motionless. Obvoiusly she was not fluent in te reo. Perhaps an oversight on the part of the press conference organisers, since te reo is one of NZ's languages.

Let's hope that's going to be remedied for next time.

Sometimes for translation of official announcements the translators are prepared for the internally shared in advance announcement paper.
But when the speaker goes with something else than prepared paper, it is hard to do live translation.
I believe for sign language it is much harder than for spoken translation.
