Call someone a poopyhead now before it is too late!

If you want to insult someone online you better get it out of your system soon.

Basically any online communication which causes harm or distress can see you sent to jail. While it will shutdown things like WhaleOil and Judith Collins Twitter account it will also impact on free speech for normal people and journalists. There is no provision for public interest or even truth. So if you had evidence of a politician committing a crime and released it online you will find yourself in breach of this new law. Tech Liberty explains how:

Bruce could find himself in trouble for his columns about SWDC et al under this new law.

Does this mean anytime an MP opens their mouth I can take them to court and send to jail?

Not if they say it in parliament -- they have given themselves special privilege to cover that.

We've lost the right to privacy and now we lose the right to free speech.

Looks like the Nazi's won WW2 after all -- it just took a while longer than we thought.

Nope, the bill only covers online communication as that is the big scary boogey man at the moment.
The Herald finally picked up on how bad this law is and analysed one example of how Judith Collins breached ner new law

If this abomination does pass in to law I can see a campaign to lay complaints against Collins and the others who will vote for it everytime they send out an ill-advised Tweet or Facebook post.

That will be why she's hiding right now Malc. Embarrassment for our Johnny in an election year.
